LOST YOUR CAR KEYS: HERE’S EXACTLY WHAT TO DO
A practical action plan for when you’ve lost every copy of your car keys. Learn what information to gather, who to contact, and how to get back on the road today.
STEP 1: SEARCH THOROUGHLY
Before investing in a replacement, perform a focused 15-minute search. Most “lost” keys are simply misplaced in common areas.
Check coat pockets and bags used in the last 48 hours.
Look under couches, car seats, and in laundry baskets.
Call the last places you visited to check their "lost and found."
Check your Bluetooth tracker app if you have an AirTag or Tile attached.
STEP 2: GATHER YOUR DOCUMENTATION
To have a new key cut and programmed, you must prove ownership of the vehicle. Prepare these documents before calling a professional:
Government-issued ID (must match the vehicle registration).
Vehicle registration or title.
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) — typically found on the driver’s side dashboard visible through the windshield.
Year, make, and model details.
STEP 3: DECIDE BETWEEN DEALER AND LOCKSMITH
For the majority of vehicles, a mobile locksmith is 30–50% cheaper and significantly faster than a dealership.
Dealerships: Often require you to tow the car to their location and may take 1–3 business days to complete the service.
Mobile Locksmiths: Usually arrive at your location and complete the job in 30–60 minutes.
Note: Certain exotic or ultra-luxury vehicles may still require dealer service due to proprietary security systems.
STEP 4: ALWAYS GET A SPARE
Once the new key is ready, have a second one programmed immediately. The cost of adding a spare while the locksmith is already on-site is much lower than paying for a full service call in the future.
